The time has finally come for IGEL OS 11.09.100. Normally, I don’t take the time to write a post on each new IGEL release, however this one is pretty big, and needs to be called out. Why so big? Well, let me hit you with the release notes to see if you can figure out why I think this is a big deal.

Base System Upgrade to Ubuntu 22.04
Contains ~ 700 updated base packages.
The base for offering all current and upcoming security updates…
… and for using new and upcoming kernel versions – to provide the best possible hardware- and chipset support.
Relevant Security Updates – for fixing…
libwebp vulnerability (https://kb.igel.com/securitysafety/en/isn-2023-19-libwebp-vulnerability-in-chromium-and-other-software-99713466.html)
libvpx vulnerability (https://kb.igel.com/securitysafety/en/isn-2023-21-libvpx-vulnerability-in-chromium-and-firefox-101063307.html – Firefox update will be offered with next Rolling Release)
libx11 vulnerabilities (https://kb.igel.com/securitysafety/en/isn-2023-22-multiple-x11-vulnerabilites-101064431.html)
Glibc security issue (CVE-2023-4911)
and more – please check CVE-list in our release notes.
Inline-Migration from OS11 Firmware to OS12 Base System
Smooth migration from IGEL OS 11 firmware to OS12 base system – in an unattended way
With that migration can be performed overnight. User stops working on IGEL OS11 and starts the next day with prepared OS12 Base System, deployed Apps and corresponding configuration – IGEL OS 12.2.1 is recommended for unattended migration.
Requires UMS 12.02.120 or later. Migration via ICG needs execution of an additional SQL statement – will be fixed in upcoming IGEL UMS 12 version.

The above is directly from the IGEL Community, which you should join.

So, lots of awesome in there, but what really needs to be highlighted is this simple note.
Smooth migration from IGEL OS 11 firmware to OS12 base system – in an unattended way.

This means that we can now upgrade to IGEL OS12, without having to do a full reinstallation of the IGEL operating system.

When you download the latest firmware to your UMS, you are presented with the following warning. Please take the time to read!!!

IMPORTANT NOTES: FOR MIGRATION TO IGEL OS12, UMS 12.02.120 OR LATER IS REQUIRED. IF MIGRATION IS PERFORMED VIA IGEL CLOUD GATEWAY, AN ADDITIONAL SQL STATEMENT IS NECESSARY TO EXECUTE ON UMS CONSOLE. THIS WILL BE FIXED WITH LATER UMS VERSIONS. FOR AN UNATTENDED MIGRATION, IGEL OS12.2.1 OR LATER IS RECOMMENDED. PLEASE SEE https://kb.igel.com/igelos-11.09/en/upgrading-from-igel-os-11-to-igel-os-12-101063106.html FOR ALL / FURTHER DETAILS. IMPRIVATA ONESIGN PROVE ID EMBEDDED REQUIRES G4 APPLIANCE AND PIE AGENT 7.12 OR LATER.

For those of you wondering why I am using a hedgehog as the hero image for this post, well, it's quite simple. IGEL is German for Hedgehog.
